Chairperson of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday for an official visit. Chairperson of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday for an official visit. This comes as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), headed by Burhan, engage the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in a more-than-two-year war. The Saudi state news agency SPA reported Burhan’s arrival, without giving details about the agenda of his talks in the kingdom. However, later, Burhan met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss latest developments in the war-affected African nation. Saudi Arabia is part of the international Quad mechanism, which also includes the US, Egypt, and the UAE, that proposed a plan in September for a three-month humanitarian truce in Sudan as the first step toward a permanent ceasefire and a nine-month transition leading to an independent civilian government. The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has since killed thousands of people and displaced millions of others.
