Veteran leader seeks re-election after constitutional changes removed term and age limits. Djibouti’s long-serving president Ismail Omar Guelleh has officially submitted his candidacy for the April presidential election , positioning himself for a potential sixth term after more than two decades in power. The application was filed with the Interior Ministry on Monday by campaign director Abdallah Abdillahi Miguil , a senior figure in the ruling Union for the Presidential Majority (UMP) coalition. Guelleh, who has governed Djibouti since 1999 , became eligible to run again after parliament removed the constitutional age limit for presidential candidates last year. Earlier reforms in 2010 had already abolished the two-term limit , paving the way for extended presidential mandates. Supported by a coalition of pro-government parties, Guelleh is widely expected to be a key contender in the upcoming election . Electoral authorities will now examine all submitted candidacies before announcing the final list of approved candidates . The official campaign period is expected to begin in the coming weeks as Djibouti prepares for the presidential vote.
